Where to Host Your Party?

Crescent Club DallasAfter the decision to have a party, where to hold a party is likely the next question.  Certainly, having a party at one’s home is the most flattering setting, but not always feasible for many reasons – from size of your home to time available for preparation.  A relatively impromptu party, such as entertaining a client or friends unexpectedly arriving from out of town, leaves little time for planning. As an alternative, inviting a couple or two for a casual dinner or Sunday brunch at a local restaurant is less challenging for the working hostess or busy housewife. It also allows the host and hostess to devote all their time to their guests and uninterrupted conversation.  It is always a treat to try a new restaurant as the setting, or one where you know that the environment will be comfortable and the food delicious.  If the restaurant is new, you might to try it out prior to inviting guests. To add the home touch before an evening event, consider having a drink at your home before going on to the restaurant.

Marquee Grill Dallas

Marie Gabrielle DallasBeyond that, the size and the occasion – and cost – are the major influences.  For smaller parties, we love to explore the restaurants with smaller rooms, where a dinner party or a birthday lunch can be privately accommodated and the chef and service will be outstanding.  There is the convenience of the setting, food and service -- and lack of expense in providing the environment.  Often, for parties in restaurants, small centerpieces might be the only additional cost beyond the invitations. For private rooms, there are many listed in our Source Section on Restaurants, and we encourage you to peruse the list.  Just a few to mention are Stephen Pyles, Al Biernat's, Ocean Prime, Nosh, Mercury Grill and Arcodoro & Pomodoro.  Highland Park’s new Marquee Grill has private spaces that will work for parties, and the chic and instantly popular Bistro 31, one of the “hottest” new restaurants, has announced an upstairs private entertainment space will open in late January. Marie Gabrielle Restaurant & Gardens works well for a smaller party, which can be expanded with the use of the outside gardens for cocktails and the enjoyment of their fabulous view of the Dallas skyline. Other restaurants to consider that will accommodate parties on their days or times of closure are Salum, Abacus, Nonna and Bijoux, to name only a few.

Rosewood Mansion on Turtle CreekHotels are next on the list, and some of the smaller hotels have both private rooms and small “ballrooms” that are splendid for the grand birthday party, honoring a debutante or bride, or for the smaller wedding.  We particularly like the Stoneleigh Hotel with its sophisticated penthouse rooms, the imposing Adolphus Hotel and the trendy Joule Hotel for those events.  The Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek has a variety of elegant smaller rooms such as the Sheppard King Suite, which can accommodate up to 100 guests, and the Hunt and Burford Suites, in addition to its gracious ballroom and adjacent promenade.  Moving up in size are the grander and larger hotels, such as the Ritz-Carlton, the Rosewood Crescent Hotel and the Hilton Anatole that are the frequent scenes of Dallas’ high profile charity events and large weddings.

Nasher Sculpture Center DallasSpecial parties are well-adapted to Dallas’ many unique venues, for which we pause to make a comment.  The non-profit venues are dependent on venue rentals to support their missions.  This is increasingly important with the current constraints on their budgets in this economy. Among our favorites are the Hall of State, the Nasher Sculpture Center, the Meadows Museum and Arlington Hall at Lee Park.  The Arts District has a wealth of special sites and interesting spaces – the Meyerson Symphony Center, the Winspear Opera House and the Wyly Theater, the latter two known as the AT&T Performing Arts Center.  The Contemporary Museum in the Design District is a new entry on the scene.  The Dallas Women's Museum had a great atrium space, and we have sadly lost that museum to the economic turmoil.

Milestone Culinary Arts Center DallasThere are many special sites, such as the Fashion Industry Gallery and Gilley's Dallas, conducive to utilizing one’s own imagination or using a theme to create the event.  We encourage you to review the special sites in our Source Selection on Venues.

Tips for Using Spaces
We do have some suggestions in considering a venue.

  • Salum DallasWe recommend that you start with a realistic budget.  It's great if the end cost is not a factor!
  • Make a list of the components of any celebration from small to grand.  Please review our Source Selections, the list of which reflects the components of entertaining from invitations to finishing touches and everything in between. Use it as a check list and a budget recorder.
  • Restaurants and hotels have the basics that come with the cost of the food and wine. Some even include the cost of parking. Only the extras - such as centerpieces and music - will be additional.
  • While it is always fun to find a new venue, consider the quality of the food and service if they come with the venue. Some venues have a preferred caterer; others come with a recommended list. Check our list of recommended caterers in our Source section on Catering.
  • Dallas Museum of ArtWhen dealing with a larger space, consider an event planner to pull it all together with a cohesive look and the flair that your guests will expect.  An event planner can visualize the impact of the selection of rentals and flowers and may even save you money in the long run. Please see our Source section on Event Planners. We have recommended most of the best of Dallas.
  • When using unfinished spaces, such as F.I.G. and the Contemporary Gallery, some dramatic elements will help. Once again, the professional will have the judgment and perhaps will have already had the experience in using those spaces.
  • If you have a recommended or favorite caterer, the catering company may have some excellent suggestions, right down to the kitchen spaces that are adequate or the restrictions some venues place on the use of the space. Please see our Source selection on Catering.

What's New

  • Partners Card: October 28 through November 6: Shopping for Charity.  The Partners Card is a unique fundraiser that benefits The Family Place’s programs for victims of family violence. Since its inception in 1993, the program has raised more than $11 million for its mission. This gets us into action to purchase, at 20% off, our wish lists from the cooperating and generous Dallas area merchants.  Think holiday gifts for the home and host and hostess.
  • The Dallas International Art, Antique & Jewelry Show will be held November 2 through 6 at the new, state-of-the-art Irving Convention Center in Las Colinas. One hundred renown international exhibitors will be showcasing their specialties with a good representation of the decorative arts that complements our raison d’être.
  • The American Institute of Wine & Food has launched its 18th year of cooking classes at the Dallas Farmers Market.  We have missed the first one of the series, but they continue on Saturday mornings through November 19 and include such chef luminaries as Doug Brown of Beyond the Box and Jim Severson of Sevy’s Grill. Check the AIWF website at www.aiwf.org/dallasftworth.
  • Halloween is not yet here.  Please refer to our October newsletter, Witches, Bats and Creepy Crawlies, especially if you have not already completed your plans for the holiday. As we all know, Halloween  has become increasingly more important on the schedule of annual celebrations.
